Leadership during uncertain times
Leadership is always a difficult element for the success of any organisation. It becomes critical during times of uncertainty. When faced with unexpected challenges and unprecedented circumstances, leaders need to step up to provide guidance, direction and stability to their teams. It can become even more challenging for the leader, when they themselves are also subject to the same circumstances.
Some key strategies for effective leadership during these times are listed below:
- Transparency & honesty – It’s essential to be open and honest with your team about what’s going on. Share as much information with them as you can, even if it’s bad/difficult news to deliver. Transparency builds trust and helps employees feel more secure even in uncertain times.
- Communicate frequently – Communication is key – especially during times of uncertainty. Make sure you’re regularly updating your team on any changes or developments and be available to answer questions or address concerns. If you are asked a question and you don’t know the answer – say you don’t know but make sure you find out and get back to your team/employee.
- Stay positive – As a leader, it’s essential to maintain a positive attitude, even when things are tough. Your team will look to you for guidance so it’s critical to stay as optimistic as possible.
- Foster collaboration – during uncertain times it’s more important than ever to foster a sense of collaboration and teamwork. Encourage your team to work together and support one another. Make sure you recognise and reward collaborative efforts.
- Lead by example – Your team will look to you as a role model. Lead by example and demonstrate the values and behaviours you want to see in your team. This includes being conscious of what you share, and not sharing your frustrations with your team. Find yourself someone out side of your team that you are able to talk to and share your own frustrations/thoughts.
Leadership during uncertain times can be challenging. Particularly for frontline leaders. Using some or all of these strategies mentioned above, will help your team navigate through uncertain times and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.
